An excellent win by England has put them in the ascendancy but chances are it will be nip and tuck all the way through the series. The edge I highlighted on the opening partnership odds has disappeared and the prices are back to 50:50, so what to bet on?

Man of the Match
A lack of time to get the pitch ready and the inclement weather forecast for the Test could give the bowlers the edge in this match. I’m following the logic of the last Test: any bowler getting seven or more wickets in a match is more valuable than centuries. Modern day Test cricket favours bat over ball so any dangerous bowling is highly rated, we saw this with Freddie Flintoff at Lord’s. I expect a strong Australia fight back and the break between Tests will have done them good. Stuart Clark is the most potent of their bowlers and, although coming back from injury, he showed at Northants why he is rated one of the top bowlers in the world; his nagging line and length is perfect for Edgbaston and a bit of movement in the air or off the seam could see him bag a hatful of wickets. He is not a guaranteed starter but is worth the punt.

Stuart Clark to be man of the match @ 22/1

Top Australian Batsman
There is not much science in this bet, rather a case of going for the obvious. Michael Clarke played beautifully at Lord’s and he is the form player in the Australian line up, his main weakness is that coming in at number five he doesn’t get the opportunity to spend as much time at the crease to build a massive score. With all that considered I still like to have the form players on my side and at the price is worth a little investment.

Michael Clarke to be top 1st innings Australian Batsman 5/1
