ROAD TO WORLD CUP BETTING
As England’s footballers prepare for their final match of the season at home to Andorra on Wednesday Paddy Power has commenced its Road To World Cup betting – with odds on who will make the England Squad to South Africa.
England, who are now 1/20 to win their qualifying group, all but have their tickets booked to next summer’s tournament and whilst the likes of Ashley Young (1/8) and Phil Jagielka (1/4) are expected to join the England party other names are still seen as having some work to do.
Young players who have been touted as the future of England by Fabio Capello include Gabby Agbonlahor (10/11 for South Africa), James Milner (6/4) and Michael Mancienne (5/2). The outsider in the market is Man United’s young striker Danny Welbeck at 6/1, despite his club manager Sir Alex Ferguson recently tipping the striker to make the England squad for the tournament.
Some old-timers are also likely to be sweating on their seats with Michael Owen 7/4 and Gary Neville 5/4 to make the squad.
Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “Club managers are queuing up to tout their stars as World Cup material but with Fabio Capello’s first choice XI mostly established already there is likely to be a lot of jostling for the final 12 places in the England squad. As we saw four years ago, the betting could well fluctuate according to form and fitness – who in 2005 thought Theo Walcott would have gone to Germany 12 months later?”
In the outright betting England are 8/1 fourth favourites. Arguably the best team in the world, Spain are 11/2 second favourites behind perennial market leaders Brazil at 7/2.
