Manchester United require just a point to retain their Barclays Premier League crown and equal Liverpool’s record of 18 titles. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side had to come from behind to beat Wigan 2-1 at the JJB Stadium on Wednesday with Michael Carrick hitting an 87th-minute winner.
Only once during Ferguson’s 10 previous successes have United done it in front of their own fans. Arsene Wenger must again guide his young team through Champions League qualification after hopes of claiming third place came to an end following a 4-1 defeat by Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium. It also ended Arsenal’s 21-match topflight unbeaten run.
The Gunners now meet United for the fourth time this season having earlier this month lost to Sir Alex Ferguson’s side in the semi-finals of the Champions League. Emmanuel Adebayor netted the only goal as Arsenal won at Old Trafford in September 2006.
