As well as the Premier League title Man United and Liverpool look set to battle it out for another award this season with Nemanja Vidic and Steven Gerrard Paddy Power’s 11/8 joint favourites to be crowned this season’s PFA Player of the Year award.
Vidic, largely given credit as the anchor of United’s record-breaking clean sheet run earlier in the season, had long been the hot favourite to win this season’s award with odds no bigger than 10/3 since January. However Steven Gerrard, who had been as big as 9/1 just a month ago, has been in sensational form almost single-handedly preventing the season from becoming a one-horse race for the champions.
Four other United players make up the short-list with Ryan gigs seen as the favourites’ likeliest challenger at 4/1. Last year’s winner Cristiano Ronaldo is 8/1 whilst Rio Ferdinand and Edwin Van Der Saar are the 28/1 outsiders.
Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “Vidic looked a certainty this season when United went on their run of clean sheets but since they’ve sprung a leak at the back Gerrard’s form has not only dragged him back into the reckoning but also his club into the title race.”
Aston Villa’s Ashley Young is the 6/4 favourite to win the Young Player award, closely followed by Man City’s Steven Ireland at 7/4.
