Portsmouth remain tantalisingly close to confirming their Barclays Premier League status for next season. They have been on the brink for some weeks now but a run of four games without a win - gaining just a solitary point against Newcastle - has meant the champagne-on-ice is in danger of freezing. Most worringly for Paul Hart’s side is they have failed to score in more than 370 minutes of football. Sunderland edged slightly closer to survival with a 0-0 draw against Bolton last time out.
But like their opponents Portsmouth, Sunderland are in the midst of a desperately barren run in front of goal. They have scored just four goals in their last 11 matches and not once in their last three. Manager Ricky Sbragia will hope Djibril Cisse can add to his 10 league goals this season with Kenwyne Jones struggling to overcome injury.
