Punters and pundits alike were caught out today by Ronaldo’s sudden world record transfer to Real Madrid but Paddy Power has responded with a number of Ronaldo betting specials to mark the £80million occasion.

Punters Caught On The Ron

As Paddy Power’s Ronaldo Transfer tracker shows, the sudden announcement this morning caught punters by surprise. The long-running betting on Ronaldo’s transfer had seen Real Madrid touch on favourites a couple of times over the last 18 months – the most recent being shortly after his substitution tantrum against Manchester City when a move to Real came into 5/6.

But in recent days United had been fully expected to keep Ronaldo’s services for another year not least following such words from the man himself on Sky Sports. Punters were still backing Ronaldo to stay at Man United last night at 8/15 with a Madrid move at 6/4.

Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “Everyone expected Ronaldo to join Madrid sometime – but no one saw it coming today. It’s unusual these days for a big transfer not to be leaked but perhaps the speed of events was too quick for punters to capitalise.”

Shirt Number Stakes

Paddy Power has installed Real Madrid’s number nine shirt as the 11/10 favourite to be the Portu-geezer’s squad number at his new home

Having long worn the number seven shirt at United Ronaldo is 4/1 to be given the number at Real. Although with Raul loathe to relinquish his number ion previous seasons Ronaldo may have to follow David Beckham’s path to the number 23 shirt at 10/1, the same price as the number ten.

Ronaldo is 10/3 to be the top La Liga scorer next season with Real Madrid cut from 13/8 to 6/4 to be domestic champions and from 8s to 7s to be champions of Europe.

No Change for Champions

As for United, Ronaldo’s departure has had no impact on their chances next season. Paddy Power are unmoved on United’s Premier and Champions League odds at 5/4 and 11/2, respectively. However Wigan’s Antonio Valencia is the 7/2 favourite to be their first summer signing whilst a transfer fee of between £30 million and £40 million is the 6/4 favourite to be United’s biggest fee paid for a player this summer.

Darren Haines commented: “Life goes on at Old Trafford and the biog names have been and gone before. With £80 million burning in his pocket Fergie shouldn’t have much problem in maintaining the Champions dominance.”

Ronaldo’s former team mates at United have barely got a sniff of any dead ball opportunities in recent seasons but who will line up to take the champion’s first penalty now the Portu-geezer has left? Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov are the 9/2 joint favourite’s despite the Bulgarian being a 12 yard choker last season.
