As F1 returns to Singapore’s night racing as many eyes will be on the likely crashes as they will on the race for the title between Brawn pair Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello - Bet on the Singapore Grand Prix with Paddy Power and get a free £20 bet.
Bookie Paddy Power is betting on any likely crashes at the scene of Renault’s ‘crashgate’ scandal – offering 4/9 for either Renault driver Fernando Alonso or Romain Grosjean to crash and 10/1 that the team mate of the winning driver causes a safety car incident in the race.
As for the world championship, Jenson Button’s 14 point lead see’s him head the betting at 2/9 with his team mate and nearest challenger Rubens Barrichello at 10/3.
Nelson Piquet Jnr’s deliberate crash twelve months ago may also inspire F1 punters to have a dabble on the first driver to retire – a market in which Renault’s Grosjean ironically happens to be the 8/1 joint favourite. Fernando Alonso is 20/1 to be first man out, whether intentionally or otherwise.
Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “The Renault scandal has undoubtedly deflected from the brilliant battle of the Brawns in the race to the title but F1 has to live with that. It certainly means punters will start paying as much attention to what is happening at the back of the race as the front – especially those betting in-running during the race.”
In the race itself, rejuvenated world champion Lewis Hamilton is the 5/2 favourite to take the chequered flag with championship rivals Button and Barrichello following at 5/1. Paddy Power offer 5/6 the pair on who will win the battle between the two Brawn team mates.
